I had a twenty year old Garrett that just died on me, and I am just starting back into the hobby and all I have to spend on a new detector is about two hundred dollars and was wondering if a Tesoro Compadre or Silver umax would be good to start with again? I like either one, would like the Silver umax more but it cost more. I would like to hear from all of you to see what you think. Thanks!

I have heard that the Ace 250 is a killer unit, it is around that amount. Do not know much about the Tesoro detectors. I read a little about the Sabre a while back but decided to get the Teknetics Omega 8000. It is around $600. Get on Ebay and search, you may find a higher end detector in good condition for the amount you are looking to spend.  Just read all you can about the ones you are interested in. Good luck and keep us informed on what you get.

Tesoro is popular in my MD club with the relic hunters, I personally haven't tried one. Ace 250 is a great coin/jewelery unit in parks but lacks manual ground balance which I think is a must at the beach. I have heard if you turn the sensitivity down 1/2 way at the beach it will perform better. The lower end Tesoro's don't have a GB adjustment either but I one of the club members said he had one put in his. So I guess if you know the right people you can have it modded.
Ace250 > Fisher F2, just my opinion. both obtainable used on eBay for $150-175. new $212.00.
Fisher F70 and F75 very nice, pricey.
Not to thrilled about minelabs
Whites are decent detectors
Large coils are great for depth but make it hard to pinpoint and trashy areas are impossible to use, small coils loose depth but give better results in trash. I recommend a 8 to 9 inch coil as a stock coil with a 5-6 for trashy areas.
it really depends what and where your going to hunt as to what you should buy but spend the cash and get something that you can GB preferably with a VDI and good tone separation. you should be able to do that for under $400 used.
good luck

I have a Tesoro Silver uMax.   It is a good coin finding machine for parks and playgrounds.  Once you learn where to turn the sensitivity up or down as conditions dictate and where to set the discriminator and maybe 'thumb it' between two points, you will love this little machine.

For relic work I use the Tesoro Vaquero, in my opinion the best relic machine on the market today.

I use a laser b2 which was made by tesoro for laser basically european version of. I think mine is a slightly modded old style silver sabre plus and its great for searching iron infested sites and i think the newer tesoros are pretty much the same when iron is concerned and pretty reliable too. But like dwatson4 said get one second hand from ebay you can get alot more for your money. I paid £150 for mine and am verry happy with it as i used to use a silver sabre 2 years ago and its very similar. Cheers m8  HH   Lee.
